Do you find that it is becoming more and more difficult to understand what people around you are saying? Do you find yourself wishing you had the skill of reading lips when you are talking to someone in an environment with a lot of ambient background noises? Do you find yourself avoiding social situations because you cannot hear and understand those around you?

You are not alone. Approximately 15 of all Americans suffer from Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL). However, Noise Induced Hearing Loss is not just a problem for the elderly, it is becoming an increasingly common affliction for younger people and middle-aged people, often resulting from the misuse of headphones or failing to wear ear protection when attending musical events compounding over the years. Hearing loss also affects people who have careers involving loud environments who have not taken the proper protective precautions either because they were unavailable, or unaware that such precautions existed.

While there are many reasons that hearing loss occurs, some of which are preventable and some of which are are not, the medical solutions to hearing loss have increased dramatically over the years. If you are are suffering hearing loss and have not spoken with your doctor about what solutions are available to you, now is the time to do so.The hits keep comin’: Sanofi Enters Into Research Collaboration With Biopharmaceutical Company Audion Therapeutics To Develop Potential Treatments For Hearing Loss

Many parents’ worst nightmares are having a sick child, particularly if the illness is something that will affect them for life. If you suspect your child may have hearing loss, here are a few things you can do now to get the ball rolling on recovery:
Check it: The first step is to take your child in for a hearing test. You’ll need to find out how progressed their hearing loss is and what type of equipment they may be eligible for.
Visit an MD: Visiting a physician or pediatrician is a must when you think your child is experiencing hearing loss. In order to rule out viruses or something more severe a doctor often has to run blood tests and other test to rule out the causes.
Check with insurance: Insurance companies often cover many of the costs associated with hearing loss. This means your child’s hearing aid, his doctor visits and even his speech therapy might be covered, so check with your agent today about what options you have.
Talk: Talking to your child about hearing loss is difficult but necessary. Teach them about the causes and effects and counsel them on what to expect in the coming years and months.

A good song can be a form of escape, a relief after a stressful day of classes or work. That’s why high school and college students often retreat into the comforting sounds of music, turning up the volume to drown out their troubles. Unfortunately, this can have long-lasting physical effects, and a recent study shows that the prevalence of damage is increasing. A study in the Journal of the American Medical Association shows that 20 of Americans between 12 and 19 suffered from hearing loss in 2005-06. And as those students get older, those problems will only get worse. The tendency to turn up the volume on ear buds is obviously damaging due to the direct contact with the ear, but loud music while driving can also be at fault. Imagine: all of that sound is inside an enclosed space, echoing and reflecting off the sides of the car. Any sound over 85 dB can be harmful. For reference, that’s anything over the sound of a normal lawn mower. It doesn’t take long, either. 8 hours of 85 dB noise can cause permanent problems, and that time is cut in half with every increase of 3 dB.

Any doctor will tell you that it’s easier to prevent a health problem than it is to cure it. Hearing loss definitely falls into that category. The world around us is getting faster and noisier than ever as people rush to keep up with changing technology. However, there are still simple (and natural) ways to keep your ears healthy. That way, you won’t miss it when life’s many opportunities knock.Noise is one of the quickest ways to affect your hearing. The ear contains sensitive structures called hair cells which convert sound into electrical energy which can be understood by the brain. Noise damages these receptors, and once damaged, they do not regenerate. Sounds that rank at 120 to 150 decibels, like motorcycles and gunshots, can easily cause hearing loss, while any long-term exposure to sounds over 85 decibels can also be potentially damaging. Therefore, it makes sense to avoid exposure to these sounds whenever possible. When you are in a position to control volume, keep it within a tolerable range, especially when listening via headphones. But what if you ride a motorcycle, or fire a gun, or work at a construction site? Then, using ear plugs can help alleviate the danger. Always make sure to protect the ears of younger children as well. There are other sources of hearing loss as well. Sticking objects in your ear to remove earwax can quickly lead to disaster. Certain medicines have also been known to cause hearing loss. The nose, mouth, and ears are intimately connected in the body, so it also helps to be aware of any problems arising with those regions Blow your nose gently, and never through only one nostril, and when flying, swallow and yawn whenever the pressure changes, such as during takeoff or landing. Finally, smoking has been proven as a cause of hearing loss as well, so avoid it whenever possible.

When you first start to notice the initial symptoms of hearing loss, it is important that you step up and acknowledge the problem before it can progress. If you, or a loved one, starts experiencing muffled hearing, difficulty understanding conversations (especially when there is background noise), or the need to increase the volume of the TV/radio, bring the problem to the attention of your doctor. It may seem sillyso what if you have to turn up the volume a little bitbut technology today makes it possible to fight the problem of hearing loss head on. Previous generations tended to put off getting hearing aids much later than they should have. Studies show that untreated hearing loss can cause problems in multiple areas of your life. Socially, patients with untreated hearing loss are much more likely to be depressed and avoid social situations compared with those with hearing aids. Economically, it is proven that those hard of hearing without hearing aids get paid substantially less than those with treatment. There are many hearing aids out there that can make your life easier. Miracle-Ear offers nearly invisible hearing aids that use digital technology to enhance your hearing. They offer a wide variety of Miracle-Ear products as well as expert hearing services to help you hear your life again. Another good hearing aid brand to look into is Siemens. Siemens uses BestSound Technology to amplify the sounds you want to hear and tune out the background noise that gets in the way.If you’re hearing loss is more severe and doctors have ruled out hearing aid help for you, you might want to consider a cochlear implant. These devices help stimulate the inner ear and transmit signals your brain is otherwise not receiving. No matter how you choose to tackle hearing loss, be sure to go about it with your head held high and your optimism overflowing. There are millions of people suffering from hearing loss, don’t let yourself become someone who lets it go untreated.

Apart from the obviousbeing able to hear betterhearing aids are proving to increase customer’s level of life satisfaction. In fact, a recent study reported increased happiness in 5 different areas of lifefor both the hearing aid user and their family members. The study of over 2,000 adults reported that relationships at home improved 66 for hearing aid users and 56 for family members. The feelings about self improved 60, satisfaction with life overall improved 62 (48 for family members), relationships with children and grandchildren improved 50, and the increase in social activities was around 30. On the other hand, the study determined adults 50 and older with untreated hearing loss are more likely to suffer from depression, anxiety, and paranoia. If you read these stats and think you could use some improvement in these areas, maybe a hearing aid would be good for you too. The first step is to get your hearing tested. If you have a hearing loss problem, there are many hearing aid options out there for you. We recommend asking your doctor about Miracle-Ear, Siemens, or Phonak. Miracle ear offers the new ME1000 Open Fit and ME1000 which are virtually invisible to the eyes of others. Siemens offers an online product finder to help you find the right hearing aid for you, and Phonak now features the new Audeo ZIP which fits deep inside your ear and delivers state of the art technology to get your hearing back up to par. Even if you only suffer the slightest side effects of hearing loss, get your hearing checked and talk to a doctor before it progresses any further. Remember that hearing loss is gradual, so catching it early means less severe consequences in the future. Hearing aids can change your life as well as the life of your friends and families. Stop asking ‘what?’, ‘can you repeat that, please’, and start focusing on the finer things in life.

If you’re new to the hearing aid scene, your doctor has probably filled you in on most of the medical benefits and rules for your new hearing aid. Now that you’re hearing better and living happier, there are a few things you’ll need to know about your hearing aid that the doctor most likely didn’t tell you.First, for the Do’s of hearing aids:Be sure you wear your new hearing aid the entire day. Chances are you’ll need to make minor adjustments gradually over the course of several days. Always be sure to insert and remove your hearing aid over a soft surface to reduce the risk of damaging it should it fall onto a hard surface. Be sure to store the hearing aid in a dehumidifier case to prevent unwanted moisture. On a related note, be sure to keep your hearing aid out of the bathroom while bathing to prevent steam damage. At night, disengage the battery by partially opening the compartment door. Also, remember to take your hearing aid out during CAT or MRI scans. Now, for the DON’Ts:Do NOT leave your hearing aid in your car or any other hot area in direct sunlight. Never use your hearing aid at the same time as hairspray, blow-dryers, or perfumes. Don’t leave the battery in your hearing aid for an extended period of time or the battery will leak and corrode the instrument. If the hearing aid breaks, don’t try to fix it yourselftake it to a professional. Don’t leave your hearing aid or hearing aid batteries around where children can reach themyou wouldn’t want your grandkids to eat your hearing aid parts. Lastly, don’t be afraid or embarrassed to ask for help. If you don’t feel your hearing aid is working properly, bring it to your doctor’s attention. If you can’t hear something, don’t be afraid to ask them to repeat it. Hearing aids can take some getting used to, so take it slow and be optimistic.

Hearing loss is bad enough later in life when you’ve had the chance to experience a world full of sound. Children who suffer the unfortunate onset of hearing loss are faced with many more complications in life than those who experience the loss in old age. Unfortunately, an estimated 5 of American children under the age of 18 suffer from hearing loss. If untreated, this condition will most likely lead to negative changes in school performance, future learning, and behavior at home. If the problem arises in infants below the age of 3, it can affect their ability to learn to speak and understand language. Catching hearing loss early is the best way to prevent these occurrences. Audiometric tests administered by doctors or at school programs will determine if there is a need to see a physician, audiologist, or ENT specialist. Your family pediatrician can determine the best course to takebe it medical or surgicalto help treat the hearing loss. While most sensorineural losses are irreversible, there are many hearing devices designed specifically for children with these problems that can hopefully help. Conductive hearing losses in children are usually caused by physical obstructions or abnormalities that can typically be treated with surgical procedures. If your child is eligible for a hearing aid, it is important to remember that their ears will grow along with the rest of their body before it fully develops around the age of 18-20.
