What to do when you suspect your child has hearing loss
May 25th, 2011Many parents’ worst nightmares are having a sick child, particularly if the illness is something that will affect them for life. If you suspect your child may have hearing loss, here are a few things you can do now to get the ball rolling on recovery:
Check it: The first step is to take your child in for a hearing test. You’ll need to find out how progressed their hearing loss is and what type of equipment they may be eligible for.
Visit an MD: Visiting a physician or pediatrician is a must when you think your child is experiencing hearing loss. In order to rule out viruses or something more severe a doctor often has to run blood tests and other test to rule out the causes.
Check with insurance: Insurance companies often cover many of the costs associated with hearing loss. This means your child’s hearing aid, his doctor visits and even his speech therapy might be covered, so check with your agent today about what options you have.
Talk: Talking to your child about hearing loss is difficult but necessary. Teach them about the causes and effects and counsel them on what to expect in the coming years and months.
